Conversion tracking
Conversion tracking setup: one number per real outcome, and the platforms optimising towards it
If the conversion data is wrong, every bidding decision inherits the error. This is a fixed-price project to make Google Ads, GA4, Meta, LinkedIn and your CRM agree on what a customer is, and to keep them agreeing.
What broken tracking looks like from inside the account
- Three conversion actions for one lead: form submit, thank-you pageview and a phone call, all set to count every conversion. Reported cost per lead is a third of the truth.
- Google Ads says 80 conversions, GA4 says 55, the CRM has 31 leads and the sales team says 9 were real. Nobody can say which number to optimise towards, so Smart Bidding optimises towards 80.
- Tags fire before consent, or not at all after the cookie banner update. Half the conversions disappeared in March and were blamed on the market.
- Meta and Google each claim the same purchase. Combined reported revenue is 140% of what the store took.
- Sales close six weeks after the click, in the CRM, and the ad platforms never hear about it. They keep buying the leads that fill forms fastest, which are the worst ones.
What the setup includes
- Definitions first. A short document naming each outcome that matters (qualified lead, booked call, purchase, opportunity, closed deal), its value, and which platform counts it as primary. This is agreed with you before a single tag changes.
- Google Tag Manager as the single layer. Google Ads, GA4, Meta and LinkedIn tags managed in one container, with a data layer for forms, calls and purchases, versioned and documented.
- Google Ads conversions rebuilt. One action per outcome, correct counting (one vs every), attribution and value settings, enhanced conversions for leads and for web, call tracking with keyword-level data, and old actions retired properly so history is not lost.
- GA4 aligned. Key events matching the definitions, cross-domain where needed, internal traffic excluded, and GA4 imports to Google Ads used only where they should be.
- Consent mode configured to your banner and region, so measurement survives the law and the modelling has something to model.
- Meta and LinkedIn server-side. Conversions API alongside the pixel, event deduplication, enhanced matching.
- Offline conversion import. Qualified, opportunity and closed stages pushed back from HubSpot, Salesforce or a sheet to Google, Meta and LinkedIn, so the platforms learn from revenue. This is the step that changes accounts the most and is skipped the most.
- Testing and handover. Every event tested on desktop and mobile, a reconciliation report showing the platforms and the CRM agreeing, and a document explaining what fires where and how to check it.
Why this is a separate project and also part of every retainer
Tracking is the first thing fixed in any management engagement and the first section of every audit, and it is maintained monthly for ongoing clients because sites change and tags break. It is also sold on its own, because many companies have a capable in-house or agency team running the campaigns and simply cannot trust the numbers. A tracking rebuild without a retainer attached is a common and sensible purchase.
Pricing and time
Fixed price, quoted after the form and a look at the current setup, scaled by the number of platforms, outcomes and whether CRM integration is in scope. Typically one to three weeks, with the CRM piece depending on access. Included in management retainers; credited against the first month if a retainer follows. See pricing.
Questions people ask before hiring
How much does conversion tracking setup cost?
A fixed price scaled by platforms and outcomes. A Google Ads and GA4 rebuild for a lead generation site is at the low end; adding Meta and LinkedIn server-side and CRM offline import is at the high end. Quoted after a look at what exists.
Do you need access to our website code?
Usually Google Tag Manager access is enough. A data layer push from forms or the checkout sometimes needs a developer; I specify it exactly and test it once it is in place.
Can you fix tracking without managing the ads?
Yes. It is a standalone project, and often the most valuable thing an in-house or agency-run account can buy.
What is offline conversion import and do we need it?
Sending later outcomes, such as a qualified lead or a closed deal from your CRM, back to the ad platforms with the original click ID, so they optimise towards revenue instead of form fills. If sales close after the click, you need it; it is the single biggest lever in lead generation accounts.
Will this handle GDPR and consent?
Consent mode is configured to your banner and regions so tags respect consent and Google can model what it cannot observe. I set up the technical side; the legal choice of banner behaviour is yours or your counsel's.
