Small business PPC management, sized to the budget instead of to an agency minimum

For local and small companies spending a few thousand a month, the usual choice is a marketplace freelancer at one end and an agency with a minimum retainer at the other. There is a middle: a senior specialist, a lean scope and a fee that makes sense for the spend.

Why small business Google Ads accounts underperform

The mechanics are the same as in a $50,000 account, but the margin for error is smaller. A duplicated conversion action, a broad-match campaign with no negatives or a service area set to the whole metro will waste a third of a small budget before anyone notices. And the market for helping small businesses is full of two bad options: very cheap management that is really an import-and-forget, and agency retainers whose minimum fee is bigger than the media budget.

Three ways to buy this, by budget

Monthly ad spendWhat makes senseWhat it involves
Under $2,000Fixed-price setup, then run it yourselfAccount built properly with tracking, negatives and a handover document. A quarterly check-in if you want one.
$2,000 – $5,000Setup or audit, plus a lean retainerFortnightly management instead of weekly, a short monthly report, the same senior person.
Over $5,000Standard management retainerWeekly work, tracking and landing pages in scope, full monthly report.

The fee is flat at every tier, never a percentage of spend, so the advice to keep the budget small is free to give.

What local PPC management focuses on

  • Service area that matches the trucks. Bidding across the whole metro when you cover half of it means paying for jobs you will decline. Radius, zip or city targeting set to where you actually go, with bid adjustments for the areas that pay best.
  • Calls tracked as calls, and as jobs. Call tracking with the keyword behind the call, plus a simple way for you to mark which calls became jobs, so the account learns from revenue rather than ring volume.
  • Emergency and planned work separated. An urgent repair and a quote request are different buyers, different bids and different pages. Merged, the urgent work subsidises the browsing.
  • Local Services Ads alongside Search where the category qualifies, with the two measured together.
  • A landing page that works on a phone, with a click-to-call button that is tracked. Most local paid traffic is mobile and most local landing pages are not.

The proof, at small-business scale

The published case is a home services company: a Houston HVAC and plumbing business spending about $20,000 a month, where cost per acquisition fell 44% and qualified leads rose 60% over nine months. The tactics above are the ones that did it, and they scale down. The results page has the detail and the limits. Industry-specific pages for HVAC, plumbing, cleaning, dental, legal and others are on diwizi.com.

Questions people ask before hiring

How much does small business PPC management cost?

Depends on the tier above. A setup is a one-off fixed price; a lean retainer is a flat monthly fee below what a full retainer costs; both are quoted on the call. Never a percentage of spend. See pricing.

Is Google Ads worth it for a small budget?

For a local service with a clear search demand, usually yes even at $1,000 to $2,000 a month, provided the account is set up properly and the landing page converts on mobile. For products with low margin or no search demand, often no, and I will say so.

Can I run the account myself after setup?

Yes. The handover document is written for an owner, and a quarterly consulting session is available for a second look without a retainer.

Do you handle Local Services Ads?

Yes, where the category qualifies, and measured together with Search so budget goes to whichever produces the cheaper booked job.

Do you work with businesses outside the US?

Yes: the UK, Ireland and Canada as well. Local targeting and call tracking work the same way; the currency in the report changes.
